Back to Training and Blogging

Hi folks, this post is just to say that I am back. After some months working and traveling  a lot by job, I am here backing to training. During this period that I disappeared, I finished the Ironman 70.3 Brazil in a good time and position. But now, after that, I am injuried and working hard to treat to finish the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Clearwater, tampa.

I had 10 weeks to train to the ironman 70.3 world championship, but after 2 weeks, I get a Achilles tendinitis and stay stopped during 4 weeks. Now, after start again, I am still feeling a soft pain and working hard with ice treatment and some massage with anti inflammatory gels.

I would like to improve my time this year, but, I don’t think that I will, as I am injured and didn’t train running sufficiently.

Lance Armstrong and Alberto Contador in the Tour de France

Hello athletes, how are you ? It’s Le Tour de France month and I am trying to watch how much I can, but I am traveling and working so much that I even can’t see the results in the website www.letour.com . Putting my personal issues out, I watch Le tour de France yestarday and was so excite with this stage. Alberto Contador (Astana) show for what he cames and Lance Armstrong (Astana) feel it. I am a huge Lance Armstrong fan, but, need to agree that Contador is extremely strong and prepaired to win. I still believe that Lance can appear as Fenix, but, until now, who does that was Carlos Sastre and Cadel Evans.

I was impressed with Sastre (Cervelo Test Team) and Evans (Silence Lotto) performance during this stage and cannot forgot to talk about Andreas Kloden (Astana), that had a great performance and just didn’t do more because should improve Lance until the finish line.

Le Tour de France, Stage 9

Who are not watching Le tour de france this weekend ? If you aren´t, you should. It´s a great moment to see good athletes cycling in a beatiful place and races. I am trying to watch during the weekend and it´s a great way to be motivated and go to train after the races.

Today We had a great race, with a victory from 2 cyclists (P. Fedrigo BBox Team and F. Pellizotti Liquigas Team) that scape from the group during the mountains and won with less than 1 minute from others that have Lance Armstrong, Alberto Contador, R. Nocentti, Cadel Evans, Carlos Sastre, Andreas Kloden and others.

Now, R. Nocentti continues with the yellow jersey and Alberto Contador is just 6 seconds behind Nocentti. Lance Armstrong is closer with just 2 second behing Alberto Contador. After Armstrong, the next athlete is Levi Leipheimer with 39 seconds behind the leader, Nocentti. The better team until now is the Astana Team, the same team that have Lance Armstrong, Alberto Contador and Levi Leipheimer. Is this team strong ?? hihihih

Tomorrow Le tour de france will have a rest day, so, the next stage will occur at 14/07. See you later.

Indoor Training for Triathlon and Cycling Races

Hi folks, today I will talk a little about indoor training, specially because I am need to do it a lot and since I started to training for this year, at february, I lost a lot of my cycling training because I need to travel a lot to work and even when I am I my town, Brasilia, I need to work a lot of time until late and cannot go to ride after 9PM, or should I go ? ;)

Well, trying to fix it and training a little bit more (I hope), I bought a cycleops indoor trainer, the cycleops Fluid 2 (http://cycleops.com/p-309-fluid.aspx) its a great weapon to your indoor traning. It´s really useful, because just this week, I had 2 days that was in Brasilia and arrived late in home, so, I just put my Cervelo P2C into the Cycleops Fluid 2 Trainer and start to ride for 40 and 50 minutes.

A great extra feature that came with cycleops Trainer is the ¨Race Day¨ DVD from realRides with Robbie Ventura. It´s a nice DVD training program that help you to stay motivated and training more serious with it. It´s better than just spin your wheels without interval training or simulation when you just training watching a movie or listening your favorites music. You can configure your training program using the RaceDay DVD and in this dvd, you will participate with Robbie in a USA masters race with a lot of intensite changes and I am really recommend this video.

The greatest cycling race, Le Tour de France is back

Hi folks, Le tour de france is back and Lance Armstrong also. Yes, I was in my bed yestarday to rest and saw the first stage, a time trial stage with strong athletes. I was out of cycling races and didn´t know the best athletes and favorites, but now, I am updated :)

The most favorites to win Le Tour de France 2009 is Alberto Contador (from Spain and won Le Tour de France at 2007), Carlos Sastre (from Spain and won Le Tour de France last year 2008) and Cadel Evans (from Australia and second place at 2007 and 2008). Of course that I believe that Lance Armstrong can do a great job and could be a surprise to everybody, but, the jornalists is not talking so much about Lance, and you know what ?? just wait some stages and check Lance Armstrong results.

Yestarday, during the time trial and first stage, 15.5km, Fabian Cancellara, from swiss, was the best and prove why he is the world champion in Time Trial races, he win with more than 17seconds from the second place tha was Alberto Contador. Lance Armstrong was the 10 place with 20 seconds more than Contador, that is from the same Team (Astana).

Today, had the second stage, with 187km, and without a winner alone, a lot of athletes arrived togheter with 4h 30 02″. So, the overal standing until now is the same of yestarday, with Fabian Cancellara with the yellow T-shirt.

Eletric Bicycle, not for triathletes, but, for everybody

Gocycle Bikes

Hi folks, after a weekend with a lot of triathlon training (running and cycling), ok, swimming is also part of a triathlon training plan, but, during the weekend, I prefer to do sports that is hardest for me. How we need to work to pay our bills, bikes, shoes and triathlon travel, I needed to travel sunday to Rio Branco (Acre-AC) to visit some customers and the funny is that was my first trip to the North in Brazil. My job is hard and I need to work a lot, but, even arriving in Rio Branco at 3AM on monday and departing to Brasilia at 2AM on tuesday, yes, believe or not, I am still have time to training. I talked about my trip to Rio Branco because during the flight, that I should sleep, but didn’t :) , I readed the TAM magazine and found some tips about to save the planet, the famous green iniciative. they are talking about an eletric bicycle made by Grain Britain.

It’s a new lightweight eletric bicycle with eco-iconic looks is firmly targeting wold-be bicycle commuters who are put off by the thought of turning up o work in need of a shower. Gocycle, set to launch this month, uses an injection-molded, lightweight magnesium alloy that’s stronger than plastic, at a fraction of the price of carbon fiber (like cervelo P2c, cervelo P3C, pinarello F4 and others). The bike’s chain is completely encased, so no grease on trousers. Gocycle also disassembles into a soft bag or white hard case for portability and easy storage in small apartments. For a bike of its size or weight, Gocycle’s most innovative feature is the micro-sized eletric motor in its front wheel hub. wich switches on with the push of a button. An in-frame battery pack holds 20 minutes worth of power, more than enough to help cyclists up a hill without breaking into a sweat.

Of course that you didn’t will use this bike to training for your next ironman triathlon event, but, could be a great choice for those friends that needs a hand to start a better life quality or those who are thinking about save the planet and change your car for a bike like these.

Now, I will leave this post and will try to sleep a little bit. Otherwise, I will have problems to swim and run today :) , and guest what ??? today is my birthday.

See you later and have a nice training.

Back to Training … Again. My goal ? Ironman 70.3 Brazil

Hi athletes, sorry about my delay, but I am working a lot last month and haven’t time to training even to blog, so, I decided to pay my entry and now I need to train. I know that I am still have a good time since the race, 3 months, but if I didn’t start to training now, I will have some problems and don’t want to do this race like the last ironman 70.3 in 2 years. I return to training for Ironman 70.3 in 2007 and done Ironman triathlon 70.3 Brazil and Ironman 70.3 World championship in Clearwater. I do the same races in 2008 and didn’t training so much, so, I finished all these races in a closer time than others.

Now, I want to make a good time and maybe finish between the 5 places in my age group (25/29 years). I need to do that, because is my last time in this age group and next year, I will have some problems to be in a good place.

Thinking about this Ironman 70.3 Triathlon that will occur in Brazil, Penha city at Santa Catarina State, I started to train yesterday. I ride 1 hour with my pinarello road bike and run 35 minutes. Today I ride 1h15 by bike with my cervelo p2c and still wish to run more 35/40 minutes. I just to let you know, I am riding with different bikes because I need to decide what is the best bike for me and after decide it, I will sell the other one.

Cervelo P2C vs. Cervelo P3C

I am receiving a lot of emails from people that ask me about the most difference between Cervelo’s Bikes, the Cervelo P2C and Cervelo P3C. I am not an expert about bike frame, composite, geometry and other features that should be used as a direction to buy a new tri bike, but, I have a Pinarello FP4:13 since march 2008 and a Cervelo P2C that I bought last january.

Ok, First of all, I want to confirm that I had the same doubt about Cervelo P2 Carbon (P2C) and Cervelo P3 Carbon (P3C). It’s obvious that the price is a big difference between these cervelo models, but, it’s all ? Of course not, when I started looking a TT bike (because my pinarello F4:13 is a road bike) , I was looking for a good price vs. benefits. We cannot agree that Cervelo is doing a great job with a good marketing campaign and a good product, but I was scared when I saw that almost 40% of the bikes at the Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Hawaii 2009 is Cervelo. I practice triathlon for a long time and already saw a lot of fashion bikes and bikes boom during my 14 years doing Triathlon as Trek and Specialized in 1996, 97, 98, Cannondale in 98, 99, 2000, Scott in 1997, 98, 99, KHS in 1995, 96, 97, giant in 2002, 03, 04, Kuota in 2004, 2005, 2006 and more but Cervelo is amazing.

Now, since last year we are watching a big movement from other competitors to change this Cervelo hegemony and they are doing it. Scott with Plasma, Cannondale with Slice, Fuji, Specialized, Kuota, Louis Garneau and others. Even Cervelo notice that and launch the Cervelo P4 last year. I feel that P4 isn’t in a good time because haven’t a big change from Cervelo P3C, but, it’s also an amazing triathlon bike.

But to finish this post, I want to say that reading a lot of forums, blogs and talking with other triathletes I choose the CErvelo P2C because the price is good for a Carbon Frame bike, with good components (Shimano Ultegra and 105), with integrated aerobars Vision and because of the famous Cervelo Brand. The most diference between Cervelo P2C and Cervelo P3C is that the P3 carbon frame have a little diference at the central tube and at the front. Other big diference is the components that in the most cases is Shimano Durace. The common price for Cervelo P2C is aprox. USD 2,500.00 and Cervelo P3C is aprox. USD 4,500.00. The bad news is that, if you are in a foreigner country as I am in Brazil, you should include the customs tax to import it and this price should be increased to higher.

Running Injury during a Half Marathon

Well, here I am, two weeks and a half after been injuried. Yes, I haven’t injuried my arms, or else I am not blogging since two weeks  ago, but I am feeling a pain near my gluteos. Reading a book for triathletes and the most common Triathlon injuries, I read some common injuries but just identified two as a possible causes for my injury: Piriformis Syndrome and the most famous in all triathletes,  runners, swimmers and cyclists: The Tendonitis and Bursitis.

Reading in more details, I believe that I have the piriformis syndrome, because I already had this pain 4 years ago with the same pain and place. The biggest problem is that the pain can probabily disapear after some weeks, months or just didn’t. So, if you have something like this, go to the doctor and take care. I already take a X-Ray but it’s ok. Now, this weekend I should do a Magnetic Resonance to compare if could be a tendonitis/bursitis, a Piriformis Syndrome or any other injury.

Here is a list of another injuries that the book Going Long explore:

  • Anchilles Tendonitis
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Chondromalacia Patella (Runner’s Knee)
  • Compartment Syndrome
  • Hamstring Strain
  • Heel Spurs and Plantar Fascitis
  • Iliotibial Band Syndrome
  • Metarsalgia and Morton’s Neuroma
  • Piriformis Syndrome – That I talked today
  • Shin Splints
  • Stress Fractures
  • Swimmer’s Shoulder
  • Tendonitis and Bursitis – That I also talked today

The book is “Going Long” from Velo Press (http://www.velopress.com) and writed by Joe Friel and Gordon Byrn. Following you can know more about the authors .

Joe Friel has trained endurance athletes since 1980. His clients have included elite, amateur and professional road cyclists, mountain bikers , triathletes, duathletes and american and foreign national champions, world championship competitors and olympians. He holds the master’s degree in exercise science, is a USA Triathlon and USA cycling certified coach and serves as the co-chairman of the USA Triathlon National Coaching Committee. He is also the author of the famous book series Training Bible with the books “The Triathlete’s Training Bible”, “The Cyclist Training Bible” and “The Mountain Biker’s Training Bible”

Any doubts about my diagnostic or more info, let me know.

Regards and have a nice training, because I am beeing crazy without training during the last 2 weeks. (Ok, just swimming a little bit, but no much)

Cervelo P2C vs. my Pinarello FP4:13 or Time Trial Bike vs. Road Bike

Well, talking about Cervelo bikes, I tought, why I publish my knowledge using the cervelo p2c bike and compare it with my road bike (Pinarello FP4) ? Great, lets go. :)

I bought my cervelo bike because I am feel a little strange in my pinarello fp4 during long rides and specially using aerobars. So, O thought that should be a good idea to go shopping a new bike during my travel to Orlando, Florida USA. I started to look for a time trial bike using forums, blogs and some store websites and my doubt was about a Cervelo P2C, Cervelo P3C, Cannondale (I already had one R1000 in 1999) and another brands as Orbea and fuji. I loved the Cannondale Slice 3, specialy the white/red and new model (2009). I gone to a bike shop in Orlando and did a test drive with a Cannondale Slice 3 black (2008 model). Its great, very aerodinamic and comfortable (the most important), the problem ? price. For me, that model, for usd 2,999.00 isn’t a big deal because the components looks like fragile. I sure that I leave this cannondale and bought the Cervelo because the Cervelo components looks stronger and with a better quality. Of course that the mind-share and market share from Cervelo was conspirating to a Cervelo bike, but, is not all.

Now, using it during some rides, I am really thinking about sell it and keep my Pinarello Fp4, the reason ? I know that a lot of people bought it and will keep buying, but, isn’t too comfortable for me as my pinarello road bike. I love my Cervelo, but I am not feel so good during my cycling training with it, so, I will change my position to try to fit better and if not, maybe I will sell it and let you know :) (Are you interested ? hihihih, just a joke)
